Fairtrade Promotional Confectionery, Sweets and Organic Chocolates
Many organisations now include organic and Fairtrade requirements within their Ethical and Environmental Policies.
The term ‘organic’ essentially means that products are manufactured from substances that have not been subjected to pesticide or herbicide spraying during their life cycle or storage. They are purer in form than products manufactured from mass-farmed produce.
It is the ingredients used within the manufacturing process that determine whether a final piece of promotional confectionery and chocolate is organic or not. Generally the two most common components for this purpose are organic sugars and cocoa. Where organic materials are used a product may carrier an organic label provided that certain threshold limits have been achieved. The products may also have a higher unit price. It is normal practice for organic items to use either organic and/or environmentally friendly packaging – to complete the concept.
Fairtrade is a product certification that is also growing in importance. The certification shows that a product meets agreed environmental, labour and developmental standards. Any manufacturer who wants to supply Fairtrade certified product is subject to intense audit and the standard is governed by the the standard setting body – FLO International. The Fairtrade mark is licensed and ongoing audit is part of the regulatory process. Fairtrade is generally applied to component ingredients in promotional confectionery and chocolates. As with organic ingredients, items including Fairtrade ingredients may also incur higher unit costs.
